Zzzzzzz…. Hmm, what?
Oh, another Assassin’s Creed game was announced at E3 2017 — Assassin’s Creed Origins. Aside from the Egypt setting and some gameplay tweaks, Origins seems quite a bit like, well, pretty much every game in the series before it.
I just can’t get excited for these games anymore. Just watching Origins‘ main character dance around and assassinate some dudes fills me with two things: a sense of “been there, done that” and memories of frustration.
I know I shouldn’t crap all over Assassin’s Creed Origins quite yet — it could very well be the breath of fresh air the series needs at this point. However, I think it’s far more likely that we’ll see yet another Assassin’s Creed game that follows the same old formula while bringing very little innovation besides a new time period in which to assassinate dudes — just like most of the ones before it.
To be honest, the Ancient Egypt setting is actually pretty enticing. I don’t have many guesses as to which historical figures the game plays fast and loose with — so there’s some promise inherent in that.
I’ll keep an eye on it as more info comes to light, and I’ll be hoping for the best. As a history fanatic, this is a series I should love. But for my money, I’d probably prefer a game set strictly in a historical time period with none of the futuristic mumbo-jumbo that Assassin’s Creed tends to dabble in.
Before you catch my surely contagious cynicism, you might want to check out the trailer for yourself.
