Beyond Good & Evil 2 Is the Stuff of Dreams

beyond good and evil 2

I never believed I would actually play Beyond Good & Evil 2.

The game has felt like a pipe dream since it was announced back in 2008, and the long years of silence did nothing to change that. With each passing year, Beyond Good & Evil 2 felt less like a possibility and more like a mirage, the kind of game you fantasize about but never actually play.

But now, after nine long years, Beyond Good & Evil 2 is finally a reality.

In spite of the “2” in the title, this isn’t a direct sequel to the classic Ubisoft game. Beyond Good & Evil 2 is a prequel, and it seeks to explore the universe beyond Hillys. The game is set in a solar system known as System 3, an interstellar hub full of explorable planets and strange characters.

Thankfully, it doesn’t look like the the original game’s leads, Jade and Pey’j, have been forgotten. While the mind-blowing trailer primarily focuses on new characters, we also see a woman with a strong resemblance to Jade. Michel Ancel, the game’s creator, has confirmed that the unnamed character has a connection to Beyond Good & Evil 1. Players may finally have a chance to meet Jade’s parents and unveil the secrets surrounding her identify.

And, hopefully, Pey’j will be a part of that journey as well. Last year, Michel Ancel shared concept art of a mystery man and what looked like a young Pey’j. Pey’j was close to Jade’s father, and it seems safe to assume he’ll be a part of this journey.

Of course, Beyond Good & Evil 2 will feature plenty of new characters as well. In the trailer, we meet Knox, a foul-mouthed, scam-running monkey, Shani, a badass biker, and we get a brief glimpse of a starship and its crew. The world-building and characters were a huge part of what made the original game so special, and it looks like they’ll be a highlight of the new game as well.

Whether you’ve spent years waiting for Beyond Good and Evil 2 or are new to the series, you owe it to yourself to check the trailer out. It feels like The Fifth Element mixed with a Franco-Belgian comic and just a splash of Pixar, and that’s the sort of thing that dreams are made of.
