Porgs Are the Ewok Penguins of the Star Wars Universe

Porg Star Wars

With new Star Wars: The Last Jedi merchandise available on September 1, 2017, we’ve gotten a look at some of the new creatures that will be inhabiting The Last Jedi‘s world. And the porgs seem particularly poised to capture the hearts of fans everywhere.

They’re kind of a cross between a penguin and an ewok. In fact, they were inspired by the puffins of the Irish island of Skellig Michael. But it’s the ewok comparison that’s perhaps even more apt here. It’s pretty clear that the porgs are designed to tap into the same type of merchandising potential that the ewoks had when they were first introduced back in 1983’s Return of the Jedi.

We can’t really blame Disney for this one. Especially when whatever plans they had for marketing Kylo Ren merchandise likely fell apart when the world saw the face of Ben Solo revealed.

Plus, the porgs are undeniably loveable.

These little guys will be hanging out with Luke Skywalker on the island of Ahch-To, and they seem to possess a great fondness for Chewbacca. A lot of merchandise pairs the little creatures with our old, familiar wookie friend.

If you’re looking to stock up on porg merchandise, there’s a great shopping list over at Slashfilm.

But there is one teensy piece of merchandise they forgot.

The Last Jedi Chewbacca Toy

If you’re looking to find a porg sized just right to hang out with your 3.75″ Star Wars figures, one does come with the new Chewbacca figure.

Personally, the 3.75″ figures are my favorite Star Wars collectible type, so having one of these guys to tagalong with the rest of my figures is pretty great.
