Super Smash Bros. Ultimate Is Rekindling That Amiibo Fire

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate

Super Smash Bros. and amiibo are a perfect combo. While so many of Nintendo’s games struggle to make use of those collectible bits of plastic and paint, Smash nails the implementation so well that it’s become difficult to imagine those two things apart from each other. (Oh, how did players ever cope back in the days of Melee and Brawl?)

It’s no secret that back when Super Smash Bros. 4 was the hottest little disc on the market, I had a bit of an amiibo problem. I couldn’t stop buying the things, and I amassed an absurd collection.

But as time went on, the passion faded. After Nintendo made too many bone-headed decisions involving the exclusivity of their figurines, I figured I was done with them for good. Every now and again, I would pick one up if I found a neat one while I was out shopping for other things, but I pretty much stopped paying any attention to new figure releases, and I certainly stopped pre-ordering the cursed things.

But now, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate for the Nintendo Switch is just about here, and it’s expanded-yet-again roster brings with it the possibility for some really cool new amiibo figures. Plus, the game is compatible with all the old Smash-series figures. This is the perfect time to discover that the amiibo love we all thought had been extinguished was just lying dormant, waiting for the right moment to rise again in a blaze of glory.

This is a problem. I might as well just walk into my nearest GameStop, open up my wallet, and dump all of its contents onto the floor. I’m probably going to be broke for a while.

Of course, this is assuming Nintendo can keep any of them in stock this time, which, let’s be honest, is maybe expecting a bit too much from the Big N.
