Incineroar Might Be the Super Smash Bros. Ultimate Character I’m Most Excited About

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate - Incineroar

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is a ridiculous game. The fact that Nintendo decided to throw every character that’s ever been in a Smash game, plus more than 100 stages, into a single game is pretty much ridiculous. It’s madness. I have no idea who greenlit this thing — while it’s probably the best idea that’s ever been had, it’s also an incredibly risky one for Nintendo. How can they possibly follow this up with another Smash game?

But no matter how this ends up working out for Nintendo, I can’t help but be giddy about it. I think the character I’m most surprised and excited by is Incineroar. This fire-based wrestler was my main boy in Pokémon Sun, which I sunk an absurd amount of hours into.

Based on the footage I’ve seen so far, Incineroar looks like he’s a medium-paced fighter with a lot of really cool moves up his sleeve. Now, I tend to prefer mid and fast characters over slower characters like Bowser and Ganondorf, so I’m happy to see that this beefy Poké-bro has what looks like a decent amount of speed under his belt. When I first heard he was going to be in the game, I actually suspected a slower character, so this is one of those cases where it feels good to be wrong.

As a pro wrestler, he’s got some powerful throws, and he comes packing his Darkest Lariat move from Pokémon Sun. He also has a tendency to strike a pose when he performs a successful move, which is pretty great.

Now, if my history with previous Smash games is any indicator, I’ll probably end up mostly playing Link and Mega Man, with a revolving door of secondary characters (I believe Shulk was one of my most-played secondary characters in Smash 4). But still, the thought of being reunited with my old pal Incineroar has me shaking with excitement.

Plus, if he ends up getting an amiibo figure, it’ll probably be one of the cooler-looking figures in the line (though I have to admit, Ridley’s figure looks amazing as well).
