Even Non-Smash Amiibo Figures Work with Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. Here’s What They Do.

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate

Amiibo functionality is back in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, and I couldn’t be more excited. I had an absolute bro-smashin’ blast with amiibo figures in Super Smash Bros. for Wii U, so I’m thrilled to see them return. All Smash-series amiibo figures work with Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. This is pretty much what I expected, since every Smash character is back for Ultimate so there’s no real reason why these figures wouldn’t work here.

A Smash-series amiibo figure, when scanned in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, will create a Figure Player (FP) character. You can play against this character, and while you do, the FP character will gain levels and begin to learn to play better. Eventually, your FP characters will get really, really good. Plus, you can keep all their progress saved directly onto the amiibo figure. It’s definitely worth training amiibo characters if you want to push your Smash skills to their limit.

Of course, you can always just scan several figures, then just sit back and watch them fight each other. It’s kind of relaxing.

So that’s what Smash-series amiibo figures do. However, even non-Smash-series amiibo figures can be used in Ultimate.

What do these figures do? Slow down there, buddy, we’ll get to that in a moment. First, I should probably explain what I mean by Smash-series amiibo figures and non-Smash-series amiibo figures. Smash-series figures are specifically designed for use with Super Smash Bros. games, while other figures are specifically designed for use with other games. This starts to get confusing when you have the same characters in multiple games, each with multiple amiibo figures. For example, there is a Smash-series Zelda figure, yet there are some completely different Zelda figures for the Legend of Zelda amiibo series.

So how do you tell the difference between them? Well, it’s actually really easy. Smash-series figures have a gold-topped base with the Smash Bros. logo on them. Other figures have different bases. I should point out that Legend of Zelda-series amiibo figures also have gold-topped bases, yet they have a Triforce design on them instead of the Smash Bros. logo.

Because that’s difficult to put into words, here’s a photo that illustrates what I mean by this:

Non-Smash-Series Amiibo Figures

As you can see in the image above, the Marth figure has a gold-topped black base with the Smash Bros. logo on it. Zelda from Breath of the Wild has a gold-topped base, yet her base has a Triforce symbol on it (the base is also a golden brown color instead of black). Waluigi has a red base with a silver and white checkerboard pattern, and Blathers from Animal Crossing looks like he’s standing on a patch of cartoon grass.

Make sense? Good.

So I put my amiibo figures to the test to create a list of every non-Smash-series amiibo that’s compatible with Ultimate, along with what each of them does. Note that this isn’t a complete list. While I own way too many amiibo figures than any healthy adult probably should, even I don’t own all of them.

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate - Peach, Toad, and Mario

Super Mario amiibo figures

Mario-series amiibo figures have red bases with a silver and white checkerboard pattern on top, which I’ve shown in an image earlier in this article.

8-Bit Mario – Create a Mario FP. (This amiibo is actually not part of the Mario series proper, as it has a green pipe instead of a checkered base, but I included it here because this is where it seemed to fit the best).

Boo – Receive a Boo Primary Spirit (Novice).

Daisy – Create a Daisy FP.

Goomba – Receive a Goomba Primary Spirit (Novice).

Toad – Receive a Toad Primary Spirit (Advanced).

Waluigi – Receive a Waluigi Primary Spirit (Ace).

Wedding Bowser – Receive a Bowser (Wedding) Primary Spirit (Ace). You will also create a Bowser FP.

Wedding Mario – Receive a Mario (Wedding) Fighter Spirit, which you can view in your Spirit Inventory. Additionally, you will create a Mario FP. If you want, you can customize the FP character so that he shows up in his wedding outfit. You do have this option no matter which Mario amiibo you scan, but it just seems appropriate here.

Wedding Peach – Receive a Peach (Wedding) Support Spirit (Ace). You will also create a Peach FP. While you can’t customize her with her exact wedding outfit, you can put her in a white dress.

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild

Legend of Zelda amiibo figures

Each Legend of Zelda amiibo figure has a brownish-gold base with a base top that has a Hyrule Triforce crest imprinted on it. I’ve shown Zelda’s base in an image earlier in this article.

8-Bit Link – Create a Link FP. This is the standard Link, not Young Link or Toon Link. (Unlike the 8-Bit Mario figure above, this one actually is a proper part of this series.)

Bokoblin – Receive a Bokoblin Primary Spirit (Novice).

Daruk – Receive a Daruk Primary Spirit (Advanced).

Guardian – Receive the Guardian Support Spirit (Advanced).

Link (Archer, Breath of the Wild) – Create a Link FP. This is the standard Link, not Young Link or Toon Link.

Link (Ocarina of Time) – Create a Link FP. This is the standard Link, not Young Link or Toon Link.

Link (Rider, Breath of the Wild) – Create a Link FP. This is the standard Link, not Young Link or Toon Link.

Mipha – Receive a Mipha Support Spirit (Advanced).

Revali – Receive a Revali Support Spirit (Advanced).

Urbosa – Receive an Urbosa Primary Spirit (Advanced).

Wolf Link – Receive a Midna Primary Spirit (Ace)

Zelda (Breath of the Wild) – Create a Zelda FP.

Tom Nook

Animal Crossing amiibo figures

Animal Crossing amiibo figures have a sort of cartoon grass design on the base. You can see an example in the image near the top of this article.

Blathers – Receive a Blathers Support Spirit (Ace).

Celeste – Receive a Celeste Support Spirit (Advanced).

Cyrus – No matter what I did, I couldn’t get Cyrus to scan. I assume his reward is the same as Reese’s (a Cyrus & Reese Support Spirit), but I can’t verify that for certain.

Digby – Receive a Digby Primary Spirit (Advanced).

Isabelle (Winter Outfit) – Create an Isabelle FP.

Kapp’n – Receive a Kapp’n Support Spirit (Ace)

Kicks – Receive a Kicks Support Spirit (Advanced).

K.K. – Receive a DJ K.K. Primary Spirit (Advanced).

Lottie – Receive a Lottie Primary Spirit (Novice).

Mabel – Receive an Able Sisters Support Spirit (Ace).

Reese – Receive a Cyrus & Reese Support Spirit (Ace).

Resetti – Receive a Resetti Primary Spirit (Ace).

Rover – Receive a Rover Support Spirit (Ace).

Timmy & Tommy – Opens Timmy and Tommy’s shop in World of Light.

Tom Nook – Receive a Tom Nook Primary Spirit (Advanced).

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate - Inkling Boy

Splatoon amiibo figures

Inkling Boy – Create an Inkling FP. There are multiple color variations of Inkling Boy, Inkling Girl, and Inkling Squid amiibo figures, but they all do the same thing.

Inkling Girl – Create an Inkling FP. There are multiple color variations of Inkling Boy, Inkling Girl, and Inkling Squid amiibo figures, but they all do the same thing.

Inkling Squid – Create an Inkling FP. There are multiple color variations of Inkling Boy, Inkling Girl, and Inkling Squid amiibo figures, but they all do the same thing.

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate - Marth

Fire Emblem amiibo figures

Fire Emblem amiibo figures have a dark red base with a brick pattern on the top.

Alm – Receive an Alm & Celica (Young) Primary Spirit (Novice).

Celica – Receive an Alm & Celica (Young) Primary Spirit (Novice).

Yoshi and Poochy

Yarn Yoshi amiibo figures

Yarn Yoshi amiibo figures are pretty easy to spot because they’re made out of yarn. They’re like little plushies.

Blue Yarn Yoshi – Create a Yoshi FP.

Green Yarn Yoshi – Create a Yoshi FP.

Pink Yarn Yoshi – Create a Yoshi FP.

Poochy – Receive a Yarn Poochy Primary Spirit (Advanced).

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate - Shovel Knight
