Shadow Moses Island in Super Smash Bros. Is a Nostalgic Delight

Super Smash Bros Ultimate - Snake vs. Snake

The Super Smash Bros. version of Shadow Moses Island first showed up in Brawl alongside what was then the most unlikely addition to the roster we could have imagined: Solid Snake. Unlikelier still, both Snake and the Shadow Moses Island stage are back in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate.

Solid Snake and Shadow Moses Island originally appeared in the PlayStation classic Metal Gear Solid, but Smash wouldn’t be content to reference just a single Metal Gear game. There’s a hangar in the background of this stage. One of three types of mech will burst forth from the hangar at some point during the fight, and each is a reference to a different game from the Metal Gear series.

There’s Metal Gear REX from the original Metal Gear Solid:

There’s Metal Gear RAY from Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty:

And there are two Gekko from Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots:

Plus, if you play on the Battlefield or Omega version of the Shadow Moses Island stage, it’s possible that the hangar will simply remain undamaged:

The Metal Gear reference that appears during any battle seems to be completely random.

One interesting thing to note here is that all of these references were also in the Brawl version of this stage, even the Gekko. Super Smash Bros. Brawl released on March 9, 2008, in North America (January 31 in Japan), and Metal Gear Solid 4 released June 12, 2008. This means the Gekko appeared in a Smash Bros. game before they even appeared in a Metal Gear game.

So thanks, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, for reminding us how much we love the Metal Gear Solid games.
