Animal Crossing: New Horizons: List of Fish Swag from the Fishing Tournament

Animal Crossing: New Horizons Fishing Tournament

It’s time for the fishing tournament in Animal Crossing: New Horizons! That means it’s time to talk to C.J. and stock up on all that wonderful fish swag in a special event that is way better than Bunny Day (in my personal opinion).

But first, I’m going to explain how the fishing tournament works. On fishing tournament days, that twitchy beaver C.J. will appear in your town square. All you have to do to begin the tournament is speak to him. He will give you three minutes to catch as many fish as you possibly can. (Note that this is different from regular C.J. appearances.)

Any fish you catch will magically vanish, only to appear inside C.J.’s cooler. After the tournament is over, you can retrieve the fish, or you can sell them to C.J. for a hefty chunk of bells. (If you manage to catch a fish that’s not yet in your Critterpedia, it will get listed when you catch it in the tourney.)

You can use bait for this (which makes getting a high score much easier), so it’s best to stock up beforehand. Additionally, fishing in the ocean is usually your best bet, since you should already be lined up with a fish after you toss your bait into the water. I like to run my little dude straight south from C.J.’s stand as fast as his legs will carry him to get to my beloved fishing spot.

(And yes, my character likes to cosplay as Big Time Beagle from DuckTales. He’s a pretty awesome dude.)

When the time is up, return to C.J. and he will give you a score. The score is one point per fish, except your third fish is worth three points. (The size and rarity of your fish won’t affect the score.) So here’s a breakdown of what score to expect when you turn in your fish:

  • 1 fish = 1 point
  • 2 fish = 2 points
  • 3 fish = 5 points
  • 4 fish = 6 points
  • 5 fish = 7 points
  • 6 fish = 8 points
  • 7 fish = 9 points
  • 8 fish = 10 points
  • 9 fish = 11 points
  • 10 fish = 12 points

I have not been able to catch more than 10 in a tournament, though I suppose it’s hypothetically possible if you get a streak of quick-biting fish rather than the ones that linger a bit and nibble.

Once you’ve collected your points, speak to C.J. again, then choose the “There’s something else…” dialog. From the next menu, choose “Swap my points for swag!” If you have 10 points, C.J. will swap them for once piece of fish swag. (C.J. will only deduct 10 points — if you have 12, for example, you’ll have 2 leftover points after he gives you your swag.)

You can repeat the tournament as many times as you want, but each subsequent attempt (after the first one) will cost you 500 bells. This is no biggie, because C.J. will buy your fish off you after the tournament ends. You should easily make more than 500 bells of selling fish every time you complete the tournament.

On top of all of this, if you manage to score 100 points cumulatively, C.J. will mail you a special gift. (You don’t have to let them stack. If you have already spent 50 points and then earn 50 more, you’ll still get the bonus prize.) He’ll also send you special gifts after you’ve earned 200 and 300 points cumulatively.

Animal Crossing: New Horizons Fish Swag

So now we get to the fun part: fish swag!

So what exactly is fish swag? It’s what the game calls its special fish-related prizes that can only be acquired by fishing in the tournament. Below is a list of fish prizes I’ve found so far in Animal Crossing: New Horizons (I’ve gotten triples of most of the prizes at this point, so I’m fairly confident this is a complete list).

Anchor Statue

Animal Crossing: New Horizons Anchor Statue

This is a piece of furniture that can be placed indoors or outdoors. It can be customized in black (shown above), silver, gold, white, blue, or retro (which has a very cool rusted look).

Bronze Fish Trophy

Animal Crossing: New Horizons Bronze Fish Trophy

This is what C.J. sends in the mail for collecting 100 points in the fishing tournament. It’s not customizable, which I suppose it makes sense. You certainly wouldn’t want a bunch of Animal Crossing: New Horizons scammers to paint their bronze trophies gold to elevate their status among fish enthusiasts.

Fish Doorplate

Animal Crossing: New Horizons Fish Doorplate

This kitschy decoration can be hung on your door or a wall. It can be customized in several colors: Light blue, red, orange, yellow, green, blue, black, or gray.

Fish-Drying Rack

Animal Crossing: New Horizons Fish-Drying Rack

This macabre item has a bunch of dead fish on it. You can customize it to change which animal is suffering this cruel fate: fish, squid, or octopus. I don’t think I’m comfortable with this.

Fish Ponchette

Animal Crossing: New Horizons Fish Ponchette

This side bag is a neat little accessory. It cannot be customized, but it looks pretty awesome as is.

Fish Print

Animal Crossing: New Horizons Fish Print

This is a stylish print that can be hung on your wall. This can be customized to show various fish: giant trevally, red snapper, blue marlin, squid (my personal favorite), black bass, carp, and giant snakehead.

Fish-Print Tee

Animal Crossing: New Horizons Fish-Print Tee

This T-shirt has a fish and some text on it. I have no idea what the text is supposed to say. No, this shirt canoot be customized.

Fish Rug

Animal Crossing: New Horizons Fish Rug

This fish-shaped rug cannot be placed outdoors, but it can be used inside your home. It cannot be customized.

Fish Umbrella

Animal Crossing: New Horizons Fish Umbrella

This classy umbrella shows a bunch of fish that are in danger of being eaten by a shark, which is also shown. This item is not customizable.

Fish Wand

Animal Crossing: New Horizons Fish Wand

This has the same functionality of the wand item, but it has a cute little fish on top of it. What’s coolest about this wand is that it doesn’t require star fragments (most of the other wands in the game need to be crafted, and star fragments are a component of all the other wands I’ve seen so far).

Fishing-Rod Stand

Animal Crossing: New Horizons Fishing Rod Stand

This is a furniture item that can be used indoors or outdoors. It can be customized in three colors: natural (default), black, and white.

Fresh Cooler

Animal Crossing: New Horizons Fresh Cooler

This is a copy of your good buddy C.J.’s cooler. Disappointingly, this item cannot be customized. I would have loved to be able to change the stickers, but such things were not meant to be.

Gold Fish Trophy

Animal Crossing: New Horizons Gold Fish Trophy

This is what C.J. sends you after you earn 300 points in fishing tournaments. Like the silver and bronze versions, this trophy cannot be customized.

Marine Pop Wallpaper

Animal Crossing: New Horizons Marine Pop Wallpaper

This wallpaper depicts a school of swimming fish (they look like the game’s version of anchovies, though I’m not certain that’s what they are). This item cannot be customized.

Silver Fish Trophy

Animal Crossing: New Horizons Silver Fish Trophy

C.J. will mail you this trophy after you’ve earned 200 points in fish tournaments. It cannot be customized.

Tackle Bag

Animal Crossing: New Horizons Tackle Bag

This is a wearable bag, though it’s nowhere near as cool as the fish ponchette. This item is not customizable.
