Conarium Is Inspired by Lovecraft Stories Like Shadow out of Time

A Miskatonic University professor is suffering from amnesia. While he can’t account for his missing memories, he feels that he has subtly changed; that something is deeply, horribly wrong. Dreams and visions of strange places hint at what has happened to him, but the truth may be too terrifying for him to bear.

That’s the plot of H.P. Lovecraft’s The Shadow Out of Time, but it’s also the premise for horror adventure game Conarium. The atmospheric, suspenseful title seeks to bring the terrifying world of Lovecraft to life.

Don’t write Conarium off as a rip-off. The trailer proudly states the game is based on Lovecraft’s work. In fact, The Shadow Out of Time is only one of the Lovecraft tales this game draws influence from. The arctic base setting and giant monsters feel right out of At the Mountains of Madness; the strange device in the trailer is reminiscent of From Beyond. Many developers have been inspired by Lovecraft, but Conarium feels like a love letter to Lovecraft’s finest works.

If you’ve enjoyed Lovecraft-inspired games like Eternal Darkness and Amnesia: The Dark Descent, Conarium is a title you’ll want to check out. The game is currently available on Steam, and is set to be released on the PS4 and Xbox One later this year.
