I Did Finish Season 2 of the Mandalorian After All

The Mandalorian

I wrote a while back how I got bored with The Mandalorian and ended up bouncing off about two-thirds of the way through the first season. It just felt tedious and anachronistic, to the point where it didn’t really feel like Star Wars to me.

I eventually caved, as I do with all things Star Wars, and I powered through the rest of Season 1 and all of Season 2. And I do have to say, Season 2 is a whole lot better than Season 1. The set pieces feel truer to the Star Wars universe than they did in Season 1, and there’s a whole ton of fan service, with familiar characters briefly gracing the screen with their legendary presence.

But that leads me to wonder: Did I really enjoy Season 2, or was I just dazzled by the sight of an older Ahsoka Tano and the reappearance of an even-more-famous Jedi later on? Was Season 2 actually as good as I remember it being?

The Mandalorian - Ahsoka

Now, I do like Bill Burr, but I didn’t care for him as Migs Mayfeld in “The Prisoner” in Season 1. However, his monologue in Season 2’s “The Believer” might be the best scene in the entire show. I don’t want to spoil too much for those who haven’t seen it, but he brings a lot of depth to the character, expressing his feelings on the politics of the Empire. It’s pure gold, and it launched him from C-level cameo to one of the show’s brightest characters. I do hope we see more of him in Season 3.

But even with that said, when I think back on Season 2, the things I remember the most are the cameos by established characters. Whether that’s Ahsoka (who’s one of my favorite Star Wars characters) to Boba Fett to the surprise appearance of [redacted] at the end of the finale, those moments stand out to me more than anything else.

And that makes me wonder if the show was ever any good at all, or if I just love those characters so much that seeing them on the screen is all I really need from Star Wars anymore. I suppose I could rewatch Season 2 and do a more detailed analysis, but there’s a part of me that perpetually feels like I’ve already seen enough of The Mandalorian for one lifetime.
